Considering Essure for Birth Control?

( Essure is a permanent form of birth control that has been on the market for 10 years. This non-surgical option has been the choice of many women across the United States because the procedure is non-invasive, with no down time, it is non-hormonal, proven 99% effective, is covered by most insurance and is FDA Approved.

This birth control method seemed like a good option for most who wanted to avoid the downtime and the surgery associated with the tubal ligation procedure. Essure works with your body to form a natural permanent barrier that keeps the sperm from reaching the egg. Materials according to the Essure website, say that Essure consists of  materials that are used in other medical devices including heart stents. They have also noted that there is a small amount of nickel-titanium, which can cause an allergic reaction.

The Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) notes in a study that Nickel is toxic to humans. The concluded that exposure can cause carcinogenic effects, and may be toxic to the kidneys, lungs, liver, upper respiratory tract, and prolonged or repeated exposure can produce target organs damage.

Since this product has been on the market, many women have complained about several different medical issues that they feel are associated with this product. Some of these diagnoses have even been directly linked to use of Essure. Women have reported debilitating headaches, long or heavy periods, allergic reactions, nausea, hysterectomies, colon perforation (due to movement of the device) and other autoimmune disorders.  In more severe cases, some have been diagnosed with autoimmune, neurological, kidney, thyroid, adrenal, and heart disorders. Many women not only want to get the word out, but also want the product recalled to get it off the market so no one else suffers from the effects due to being mislead by the product marketing.

The reason behind many of these medical conditions is that the PET fibers create an irritation in the fallopian tubes causing scar tissue which grows over the coils to block fertilization. This process can cause chronic inflammation, which is an immune system response that sets your body into a defense mechanism causing it to fight not only the foreign body but the infection also. The response of the human body to an infection it is unable to fight is possible cell and gene mutation.

Erin Brockovich is now involved in the getting the word out with a website she created after receiving numerous letters from women who went through the procedure. The women who contacted her reported having life altering side effects and complications since the implantation of the doctor recommended device. “I trusted my doctor and didn’t do research on it. Ever since my surgery, I’ve felt headaches, dizziness, fatigue and hot flashes. This was never a problem before Essure. I just want to get the word out” said an Apple Valley resident who is eager to help spread the word. The  website created by Erin Brockovich created a voice for these women and a place where can share their experiences.  Women considering this permanent birth control option should do the proper research on this product or any product before choosing.
