BARSTOW, Calif. — The California Highway Patrol, Barstow Area, in conjunction with Barstow Police Department will be conducting a Sobriety/Driver License Checkpoint in the Barstow area, within San Bernardino County on Friday, December 13, 2024, from 8:00 P.M. to 2:00 A.M.
The exact location will be announced Friday, December 13, 2024, at 5:00 P.M. The primary objective of a Sobriety Checkpoint is to ensure the safe passage of each and every motorist on our highways by targeting roads where there is a high frequency of drunk driving related accidents and/or prior arrests.
Several local residents and visitors to our local communities are needlessly injured or killed as a result of drunk driving related accidents.
A Sobriety Checkpoint is an effective and proven method to remove drunk drivers from local highways. They also help raise public awareness of this important driving safety issue while augmenting regular patrol operations.
The checkpoint will be staffed by uniformed officers from the Barstow CHP office and Barstow Police
Department who are trained in detecting alcohol or drug impaired drivers.
Officers will also be equipped with handheld, blood alcohol testing devices, which provide an accurate measure of blood alcohol concentration of suspected drunk drivers.
Traffic permitting, all drivers will be screened as they pass through the checkpoint. Those drivers that
have been drinking or exhibit signs of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be detained
for further evaluation and field testing.
Drivers who are determined to be under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs will be physically arrested, and their vehicles towed away.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP), Barstow Police Department, and law enforcement agencies statewide are committed to the aggressive enforcement of the state’s impaired driving laws.
Partial funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
