CHP: Alcohol a factor in fatal I-15 freeway crash near Baker

BAKER, Calif. (VVNG.com) –California Highway Patrol officials said alcohol was a factor in a crash that claimed the life of a 21-year-old woman on the I-15 freeway over the weekend.

Diana Quintanilla Torres, a resident of Anaheim, was identified by the San Bernardino Coroner’s Office as the passenger killed in a traffic accident involving a vehicle and a semi on February 9, 2019.

According to CHP Officer Jacob Wheeler, at about 3:04 am, a 61-year-old male from Downey was driving his 2012 Peterbuilt tractor-trailer northbound on the I-15 freeway, north of Cima Road in the no.3 lane.

A 23-year-old male from Santa Ana was driving a 2017 Honda Accord in the no. 2 lane approaching the rear of the semi.

“As the Honda approached the rear of the Peterbuilt, the driver of the Honda allowed his vehicle to drift from the #2 lane, into the #3 lane, and collided with the rear of the Peterbuilt,” stated Wheeler.

Torres who was sitting in the front seat of the Honda was not properly wearing a seatbelt and sustained fatal injuries, CHP officials said.

The driver of the Honda sustained major injuries and was transported by air to University Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.  The driver of the Peterbuilt was uninjured.

Officer Wheeler said alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor in this collision.

This collision is currently under investigation. Anyone with additional information regarding this collision should call the Barstow CHP station at 760-255-5900.
