California Highway Patrol Welcomes 121 New Officers, Exceeding Recruitment Goal of 1,000

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (VVNG.com) — The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has announced a significant achievement in its recruitment efforts, officially swearing in 121 new officers that bring the Department’s total hiring past the initial goal of 1,000 officers.
The ceremony held at the CHP Academy in West Sacramento marks the completion of several months of intensive training for the new officers, all of whom will be assigned to one of the CHP’s 102 Area offices across California. This graduating class is notable for being the largest since June 2022, which saw 128 officers sworn in.
Governor Gavin Newsom acknowledged the importance of this milestone, stating, “Two years ago, we set an ambitious goal of recruiting 1,000 new CHP officers – and today, with this class, we have officially surpassed that goal. This accomplishment reflects the commitment to public service and community safety embodied by each of these officers.”
CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee highlighted the significance of the new recruits, noting, “By surpassing our recruitment goal, we’re adding highly-trained, committed officers who are ready to make a positive impact and meet the evolving needs of California. We appreciate the dedication these officers bring to their new roles.”
The training at the CHP Academy is comprehensive, covering essential topics such as ethics, cultural diversity, and leadership. Cadets also engage in specialized instruction on mental health crisis response, traffic control, report writing, and various state codes essential for their duties.
Among the newly sworn-in officers, three hail from the Victor Valley region:
- Anthony Ramirez Jr., originally from Victorville, will serve at the Santa Rosa Area office. A graduate of Chaparral High School, he previously studied Computer Science at Victor Valley College and worked as a Highway Maintenance Worker for Caltrans.
- Omar Solorio, from Adelanto, will serve at the Baldwin Park Area office. A Silverado High School graduate, he worked as a Commercial Truck Driver before joining the CHP.
- Ronneill Sabado, also from Victorville, will be assigned to the Barstow Area office. He graduated from James Clark Maxwell High School in Italy and previously worked as a Truck Driver in Rancho Cucamonga.
The CHP’s multi-year recruitment campaign, initiated in June 2022, has garnered significant interest, with over 21,000 applications submitted in the first ten months of 2024 alone. This marks a 29% increase compared to the previous year’s total.
To address this influx of applicants, the CHP is running three concurrent cadet classes at its training facility, with more than 250 cadets currently in training. A new class of 160 cadets is set to begin on December 1.
The CHP remains focused on its recruitment initiatives to ensure the future of public safety in California. For more information on careers with the CHP, interested individuals can visit the website or attend the upcoming virtual hiring seminar scheduled for November 26.
The mission of the CHP is to provide the highest possible level of safety, service, and security to the community.
