Unfortunately, last night was a completely different story for commuters as the winter storm caused CHP to close down the 15 freeway in both directions from the top of the Cajon Pass down to State Route 138 at approximately 9:30 PM. To add to the frustrations highway 138 was also closed due to multiple reports of vehicles sliding all over the roadways due to black ice.

Many desperate commuters attempted to take side roads as a detour causing even more calls for help to be made to dispatch. The freeway closure caused a major traffic gridlock all the way down to the 210 Freeway in Rancho Cucamonga.

CHP reopened the northbound lanes at approximately 10:30 PM and the southbound side was reopened just before 11:30 PM on Tuesday.

If you are planning on hitting the mountains to take in the fresh coating of snow please be advised chain requirements are in full effect. Chains are required on all vehicles except four-wheel drives or all-wheel drives with snow tread tires on all four wheels, per CHP logs.

BIG BEAR: State Route 18 south through Lucerne Valley chains are required .5 miles south of Smart Ranch Road thru to Greenway Drive and beyond.

WRIGHTWOOD: State Route 2 east through Wrightwood be advised chains are required starting at the LA/SBD County Lune thru to State Route 138 and beyond.

CRESTLINE: State Route 18 north through Crestline chains are required thru to Arrowhead Highland and beyond.
