Buena Park man ejected, killed in crash on 15 freeway near Barstow on Valentine’s Day

BARSTOW, Calif. (VVNG.com) — A 65-year-old Buena Park man was killed in a traffic accident on Valentine’s Day along the I-15 freeway near Barstow.

On February 14, 2024, at approximately 12:47 p.m., officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Barstow Area responded to a traffic crash on Interstate 15 northbound, near milepost marker 15 SBD 113.00, within San Bernardino County’s unincorporated area.

Upon arrival, CHP officers determined the Buena Park man was driving a 2002 GMC Sierra southbound on Interstate 15, north of Afton Canyon Road, with a 49-year-old female passenger.

Simultaneously, a 22-year-old male was operating a 2020 Chevrolet Equinox southbound in the #1 lane, north of Afton Canyon Road.

For reasons still under investigation, the GMC driver entered the median of southbound Interstate 15, attempting to pass the Chevrolet. While merging back into the #1 lane, the GMC collided with the Chevrolet.

The impact caused the GMC to lose control, overturning and re-entering the median before coming to rest within the lanes of northbound Interstate 15.

Tragically, due to not using the GMC’s safety restraint system, the driver was fully ejected from the vehicle and pronounced deceased by emergency medical personnel on the scene.

The 49-year-old female passenger from the GMC sustained minor injuries and was transported to Dignity Health – St. Rose Dominican Hospital, Siena Campus in Henderson, NV. The driver of the Chevrolet suffered suspected minor injuries.

The identity of the deceased male is pending notification on the next of kin by the San Bernardino County Coroner’s office.

Alcohol and/or drugs are not believed to be contributing factors in the crash. The incident is currently under investigation by the California Highway Patrol, Barstow Area.

Anyone with additional information is urged to contact the CHP Barstow Area office at (760) 255-5900.
