Body of 28-year-old man recovered after jumping from cliff into Colorado River

LAKE HAVASU, AZ — Mohave County Sheriff’s officials confirmed a male drowned after jumping from a cliff into the Colorado River, north of Lake Havasu on Thursday afternoon.

The victim has been identified as Dane Jay Shields, 28 of Havasu Lake, CA.

On August 8, 2019, at about 1:15 pm the sheriff’s Boating Safety Division was notified of a male subject that jumped into the water at Blankenship Bend near the Sandbar, and had not resurfaced.

Early reports indicated that the male subject jumped off a cliff and failed to resurface, officials said.

The Division of Boating Safety began investigating, with assistance from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, Lake Havasu City Police Department Dive Team, and Department of Public Safety (DPS) Ranger Helicopter.

At approximately 4:09 PM, the male subject was located deceased and recovered by divers.

Witnesses advised that Shields jumped off the approximately 30ft cliff, landed wrong, and never resurfaced.

This investigation is ongoing.
