Apple Valley woman jailed for beating up elderly family member found dead in cell

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. (VVNG.com) — A 50-year-old woman recently jailed for beating up an elderly family member was found dead inside her cell at the West Valley Detention Center.

According to a sheriff’s news release, deputies entered the cell of Perla Alvarado at about 1:10 am, on Wednesday, March 6, to clean it and found her “unresponsive and cold to the touch.”

Medical staff arrived and rendered life-saving measures; however, she was pronounced deceased.

Officials said Alvarado was housed in a one-person cell. An autopsy will be conducted by the Riverside County Coroner’s Office to determine the cause of death.

Victor Valley News Group was the first to report on the arrest of Perla Alvarado after sheriff’s officials confirmed she assaulted an elderly family member.

It happened when deputies responded to the 23100 block of Minnetonka Road reference a welfare check and learned Alvarado had made several threats via cellphone to an elderly family member.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Jacqueline Alban said the victim went to his neighbor’s house and asked them to call 911.

“Alvarado followed the victim to the neighbor’s home and began to punch him in the head, arm and ribs. The victim curled up in ball, on the floor, to protect himself from further injuries. While on the floor, Alvarado continued to kick and punch the victim,” stated Alban.

According to public court records, Alvarado was a medical no-show for her last hearing on March 4th.
