Apple Valley school bus drivers advance to State “Roadeo” competition

Apple Valley, Calif.- Three school bus drivers represented Apple Valley Unified School District at the California Association of School Transportation Officials (CASTO) Southern Sectional School Bus “Roadeo” on Saturday and have each earned a spot to compete at the CASTO State Championship Roadeo in Galt later this month.

Angel Ruiz, Kevin Thomas and Theresa Ruiz placed 7th, 6th and 4th respectively in the Professional Class category.

“I am super proud,” said AVUSD Director of Transportation Sandy Dillman, who will retire at the end of the school year. “After the third win, I just couldn’t stop crying. It was the best day ever. State Championship here we come.”

The CASTO Roadeo exists to promote safety and to sharpen drivers’ skills. Drivers compete against one another through written exams, vehicle inspections, and an obstacle course, which requires drivers to parallel park, make turns, back up and practice safe loading and unloading.
