We have been monitoring the new Blue Cut Fire all afternoon and with the high winds, air quality, and a portion of our community under evacuation orders, we are closing all schools in our district tomorrow, August 17. We will continue to monitor the fire and keep you informed as to when our schools will reopen. The latest information will be posted on our web site and on our Facebook page. Once again, schools in our district will be closed tomorrow, August 17. In addition, we would like to announce that the Red Cross has established an evacuation center at Sultana High School located at 17311 Sultana Avenue.
Oro Grande School District:
In an effort to keep our students and staff safe and unaffected, all three campuses of Riverside Preparatory will be closed for Wednesday, August 17. The fast-moving Blue Cut Fire has forced many area evacuations and created a heavy plume of smoke, affecting our students and staff, and the air quality of the valley.
All activities for tomorrow are cancelled. Riverside Prep Elementary’s Back to School Knight is postponed and will be rescheduled.
Snowline Joint Unified School District:
All schools in the Snowline School District are closed on Wednesday, August 17th, due to the Blue Cut Fire.
Victor Valley Union High School District:
The Victor Valley Union High School District has canceled classes and other activities at all sites on Wednesday, Aug. 17, due to air quality concerns.
The district office and Central Enrollment Center will also be closed on Wednesday. Administrators will report to their respective sites on Wednesday, but all other staff will have the day off.
“Student safety is a top priority for our district, and we cannot jeopardize the health of our students and staff,” VVUHSD Superintendent Dr. Ron Williams said. “We decided to join neighboring High Desert districts in canceling school tomorrow, and we will continue to monitor the situation.”
An update will be provided Wednesday.
As the Blue Cut Fire broke out on Tuesday, Aug. 16, outdoor activities, including sports practices, were canceled at all school sites due to smoke from the blaze.
A Board of Trustees meeting is scheduled for Wednesday evening but may be canceled. District officials will make that determination on Wednesday.
