73 Years of Love: Apple Valley Couple Celebrates Marriage That Began at a Bus Station

APPLE VALLEY, Calif. (VVNG.com) — When Pat Shamblin returned from his military deployment in Germany decades ago, he was greeted at the bus station not with flowers or a sign—but with a marriage license.

Patricia Shamblin had made up her mind. The pair had known each other since the fourth grade in Arkansas and dated on and off throughout their school years.

After years of long-distance letters during Pat’s deployment, Patricia came prepared. They found a church, and a pastor and his wife agreed to officiate and witness the wedding that same day.

On December 19, 2025, the couple celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary at Whispering Winds of Apple Valley, the senior community where they now reside.

Their journey has taken them through at least seven states, raising three children and welcoming four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren along the way. Pat worked for the government and later attended college, while the couple lived in California, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Texas, Alabama, and eventually settled in Victorville before moving to Whispering Winds.

According to Patricia, their marriage works because they balance each other. “He’s idealistic, and I’m a pessimist, so we balance each other out,” she said. “We go with the flow.” Pat added, “If you never try anything, you’ll never do anything. She makes up for my shortcomings.”

That “go with the flow” spirit was tested a few years ago when friends at the Victorville senior center organized a surprise anniversary party for them—but forgot to invite the guests of honor. The couple missed their own celebration.

Margo Guertin, Sales Director of Whispering Winds, shared how much their story has touched the community. “The bus station story gets me every time,” she said. “No engagement, no big proposal, just ‘let’s find a church and do this today.’ They’ve been married for 73 years now, which is incredible, but what really strikes me is how they talk about each other.”

The celebration at Whispering Winds honored not just the years the couple has spent together, but the way they’ve lived those years—with humor, loyalty, and a deep-rooted partnership that began on a spontaneous winter day.
