On May 31st, the Victor Elementary School District held its 5th Annual College and Career Fair at Challenger School of Sports and Fitness. This event provided all of the district’s kindergarten through sixth grade students the opportunity to learn about the many career and education options they have available for their future. Over sixty community representatives from the Victor Valley lined the halls with interactive booths ranging from careers in broadcasting, science, military, beauty, and architecture to universities and scholarship programs.
TXI Riverside Cement sponsored the event, and Victor Valley College was an especially enthusiastic supporter, sending twelve of their departments to participate. Students were able to manipulate computer components with the Electronics and Computer Technology department, gain hands-on first aid and medical experiences with various health and rescue departments, and garnish creative appetizers with Restaurant Management.
Top student career projects from across the Victor Elementary School District were also displayed. The multimedia projects included PowerPoint presentations, display boards, career books, persuasive speeches, and career dioramas. During the evening, many students from Brentwood School of Business, Irwin Elementary, Challenger School of Sports and Fitness, and Park View Elementary also presented their projects at the fair. “It’s so exciting to see an event that affords students the opportunity to apply the 21st century skills that are going to be required by the new Common Core State Standards,” said Michelle Dale, support specialist for Victor Elementary School District.
The projects are the culmination of the students’ learning experiences in the VESD Careers Curriculum and K16 Bridge Program. These programs allow students to explore soft skills and research career opportunities. A strong emphasis is placed on the importance of higher education in a variety of settings (junior college, university, vocational, or military). The curriculum and fair are aligned with the Victor Elementary School District vision: “ To prepare students to be able to select from a variety of career opportunities and to be successful in the world of work.”
