1 person airlifted after Hyundai sedan collided with a train on Phelan Road

PHELAN, Calif. (VVNG.com) — One person was airlifted after a Hyundai sedan collided with a freight train Sunday afternoon.

It happened at about 1:06 pm, on January 21, 2024, on Phelan Road and White Road.

San Bernardino County Fire responded to the incident and reported a gray vehicle with major damage and one person trapped inside.

Firefighters advised they would have to extricate the person stuck inside the vehicle and requested an airship to land at the scene.

Firefighters made contact with the conductors of the freight train and confirmed the train would be stopped on the tracks for the time needed.

Law enforcement assisted with closing the roadway in both directions while a Mercy Air helicopter landed in the roadway.

The critically injured occupant was flown to Antelope Valley Medical Center. A second occupant from the vehicle with less critical injuries was transported by ground ambulance to the same hospital.

The hard road closure prompted a traffic gridlock in the surrounding area. The roadway was reopened at about 2:40 pm.

No other injuries were reported and CHP officers responded to assist, however, similar investigations are typically handled by the BNSF Police.
