HESPERIA, Calif. (VVNG.com) – One person was killed and a second was injured during an off-road traffic collision Sunday afternoon.
It happened at about 1:53 pm, in a desert area near Yucca Terrace Drive east of US Highway 395 in the unincorporated area of Hesperia.
According to scanner traffic, help was called for a person who was trapped and possibly deceased under an off-roading vehicle described as a ‘Rhino’.
“Deputies and Fire personnel arrived on scene and found a 2009 Yamaha Rhino, side by side OHV overturned and the adult male driver trapped underneath the vehicle. An adult female passenger had been able to escape from the vehicle and was suffering from minor injuries,” sheriff’s officials said in a news release.
Upon arrival, San Bernardino County Firefighters found a 19-year-old male trapped underneath the Rhino and despite life-saving measures he was pronounced deceased at the scene. A female passenger was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Based on evidence at the scene it was determined the vehicle had been traveling east on an unmaintained dirt trail near Acacia Road, when the driver made a left turn at an unknown speed, causing the vehicle to overturn. The driver and passenger were both wearing safety harnesses, however helmets were not being used and the driver was partially ejected as the vehicle overturned,” officials said.
The Hesperia Station Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is conducting the investigation and the exact cause of the collision is under investigation.
Anyone with information regarding the collision is asked to contact Deputy Jeremy Deberg or Sergeant Doug Hubbard from the Hesperia Sheriff’s Station at (760) 947-1500.
