Veteran Suicide Awareness 5K this June 18

HESPERIA:( Twice deployed veteran Evita De La Cruz will be hosting a 5K/10K walk this June 18, 2016. The purpose of the walk is to raise awareness for veterans with PTSD.

De La Cruz lost her husband when he committed suicide three years ago. Army Sargeant James De La Cruz battled with PTSD and ultimately lost; however, Evita didn’t let this loss weigh her down. In fact, she took up arms and decided to fight to raise awareness.

This will be De La Cruz’s second PTSD Awareness Walk, she runs the Veteran Suicide Awareness Project Facebook page and website. There will be mental health professionals present at the walk this Saturday and helpful resources will be available for those who need help. Bring a flag with a fallen hero attached and walk them through Hesperia to show your support.

You can register for the walk via this link. The walk begins at 9 a.m. at the Stater Bros. at 14466 Main St and ends at Hesperia lake at 7500 Lake Arrowhead Rd.

At least 22 veterans commit suicide daily, with at least one suicide from post 9/11 veterans and a majority of the affected veterans being from the Vietnam-era (source:
