Highway 18 briefly closed after rollover crash in Apple Valley

APPLE VALLEY, Calif. (VVNG.com) — A stretch of Highway 18 was temporarily closed as officials worked to clear an accident Wednesday afternoon.

At about 1:12 pm, Apple Valley Sheriff’s Station Deputies responded to a single vehicle rollover crash with fire between Stoddard Wells and Apple Valley Roads. Upon arrival, they located a white Kia Rio on its roof that had left the roadway and crashed into an embankment with several large boulders.

According to a witness at the scene, immediately after the crash, the engine compartment caught on fire while the driver remained inside the vehicle. Several good Samaritans pulled the man to safety and with dirt and a fire extinguisher they managed to extinguish the fire.

The driver and sole occupant was alert and speaking with deputies

Eastbound traffic on Highway 18 was detoured for approximately an hour at Stoddard Wells Road.

The official cause of the crash remains under investigation.
