Hesperia, Calif. – Two orphaned kittens were rescued this week after being trapped in a storm drain near a restaurant drive-thru on Main Street near Escondido.
The Hesperia Animal Shelter received a call from restaurant employees stating that several customers had reported hearing kittens crying in the parking lot. Staff responded and searched for the kittens over two days before discovering two black and white kittens trapped at the bottom of a storm drain, approximately 20 feet below the street.
Unable to reach the kittens, Animal Control Officers contacted their colleagues at the Hesperia Water Department to request assistance in the rescue. Water Department staff lowered a cat-carrier baited with wet kitten food into the storm drain, luring both kittens inside before carefully hoisting them out of the drain.
The fortunate felines, dubbed Lucky and Stucky, are being cared for at the Hesperia Animal Shelter and will be available for adoption next week.
The Hesperia Animal Shelter is offering $15 cat adoptions during the month of October. Those interested in adopting a pet are encouraged to view adoptable animals online at www.petharbor.com.
