CHP: Man killed on SR-18 crash was possibly fleeing from hit-and-run

PHELAN, Calif. (VVNG.com) — A 38-year-old Los Angeles man killed after his SUV collided with a semi was possibly fleeing from the scene of crash, officials said.

The deadly crash happened along State Route 18, east of Blanco Road on February 18, 2018, in the town of Phelan.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver of the 2011 Nissan Rogue was possibly fleeing from a three vehicle, non-injury, hit and run traffic collision, that he was involved in. The driver continued traveling above the ‘posted speed limit’ westbound on SR-18 and crossed over the eastbound lanes of traffic.

A 40-year-old truck driver from Monahans, TX was driving a 2007 Volvo truck-tractor combination eastbound approaching the Nissan Rogue. “Due to the driver of the Nissan traveling westbound in the eastbound lane and at an elevated speed, the front of the Nissan Rogue collided with the Volvo truck tractor head on,” officials said.

After the impact, the SUV continued to travel in a north-westerly direction as it overturned onto the westbound dirt shoulder of State Route 18, causing fatal injuries to the driver.

The force of the collision sent debris into the path of a 2007 GMC Sierra pickup, causing minor damage, which was being driven by a 29-year-old male from Camarillo, CA.

The Volvo truck tractor continued to travel in a north-easterly direction across the westbound lane where it struck a 2017 Volkswagen Jetta being driven by a 31-year-old female from Saugus, CA.  Following this impact, the Volkswagen Jetta came to rest facing west within the westbound traffic lane of State Route 18.

The Volvo truck tractor came to rest facing in a northeasterly direction on the westbound dirt shoulder of State Route 18. The driver of the tractor-trailer and the Jetta sustained minor injuries as a result of the collision, authorities said.

According to the San Bernardino County Coroners Office, Identification of the deceased male has been confirmed and the name will released when the next-of-kin is notified

This collision is still under investigation by the California Highway Patrol Victorville Area office. Anyone with information regarding this traffic collision is urged to call (760)241-1186.
