BARSTOW, Calif. (VVNG.com) One person is dead and two others are injured following a traffic collision involving a military Humvee and a semi truck.
Officials say the crash happened at about 1:15 p.m., on Monday, February 12, 2018, on northbound State Route 247 just south of Barstow.
A 33-year-old male from Fontana, CA, was driving a military AM General HMMWV (Humvee) while a 58-year-old male from Adelanto, CA, was driving a Kenworth tractor trailer combination, southbound SR-247, officials said.
“For unknown reasons, the driver of the Humvee traveled onto the right dirt shoulder of northbound SR-247. Upon entering the shoulder, the driver steered the Humvee to the left and the Humvee began rotating in a counter clockwise direction,” said CHP officials from the Barstow Station.
“This unsafe turn caused the Humvee to traverse the northbound lane, cross the solid double yellow lines, and enter the southbound lane. After entering the southbound lane, the Humvee collided with the Kenworth,” authorities said.
The driver of the Humvee sustained major injuries, the passenger of the Humvee sustained fatal injuries, and the driver of the Kenworth sustained minor injuries.
As a result of the crash, a sig alert was issued after Highway 247 was closed in both directions for several hours Monday.
Alcohol and/or drugs are not believed to be a contributing factor in this collision. The identity of the deceased passenger in the military vehicle has not been released at this time.
This collision is currently under investigation by the California Highway Patrol, Barstow Area.
